Built to Last

Discussion Questions

(Use for small groups, Sunday evening gatherings, or personal reflection.)

Read Luke 6:46–49

Why do you think Jesus begins this parable with the question, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” What is He challenging in His listeners?

What are some “storms” you have faced recently—physical, emotional, or spiritual? How did they reveal the foundation of your life?

How can obedience to Jesus’ words be compared to building a strong foundation?

In what ways do storms deplete, diminish, or distort your faith?

Which of these three (energy, peace, perspective) do you struggle with most?

How has Christ restored your strength, renewed your peace, or reoriented your perspective in a difficult season?

What spiritual disciplines or habits help you stay connected to the Rock before the storms come?

If someone told you they felt their “house” was collapsing spiritually, what practical encouragement from this passage could you offer them?

Daily Devotions for the Week

Each day connects to one main truth from the sermon — with versions for Adults, Youth, and Children (with activities).

MONDAY – Built on the Rock

Scripture: Luke 6:46–49

Adults:

Ask yourself: Am I only hearing Jesus’ words, or also doing them? Building a solid foundation takes time and trust. What area of life do you need to “dig deep” and lay on Christ today?

Youth:

What’s one decision or habit you could anchor in Jesus this week—your friendships, your words, your time online? Building on the Rock starts with one obedient choice at a time.

Children:

Jesus said the wise man built his house on the rock!

Activity: Build two small “houses”—one on sand (a pan of sugar or rice), one on a brick or rock. Pour a little water (“rain”) and see which one stays standing.

Talk about: Why does obeying Jesus help us stay strong?

TUESDAY – When You’re Worn Out

Scripture: Isaiah 40:29–31

Adults:

When storms drain your energy, God renews your strength. Pause to pray: “Lord, I’m tired. Fill me again.” Wait in His presence—He gives power to the faint.

Youth:

Everyone gets tired—even Jesus rested. What can you do this week to connect with God and recharge spiritually?

Children:

God gives strength like eagles’ wings!

Activity: Draw or make a paper eagle. On its wings, write things that give you strength (prayer, Bible, church, friends). Hang it where you can see it.

WEDNESDAY – Peace in the Storm

Scripture: Mark 4:35–41

Adults:

Jesus’ peace isn’t the absence of storms—it’s His presence in the storm. What storm in your life needs the words “Peace, be still”? Ask Him to calm your heart today.

Youth:

Imagine Jesus in your “boat.” What does it mean for Him to be with you in school, sports, or stress?

Children:

Jesus can calm storms!

Activity: Use a bowl of water to make “waves.” Say “Peace, be still!” and watch it settle. Jesus helps calm our hearts too!

THURSDAY – Seeing Clearly Again

Scripture: Psalm 73:16–17

Adults:

Storms can distort our vision of God’s goodness. Asaph found clarity “when he entered the sanctuary.” Take time today to worship or be still before God—perspective returns in His presence.

Youth:

Have you ever felt jealous or confused about why bad things happen? Ask God to help you see life from His point of view, not just your own.

Children:

When we look through God’s eyes, things look right!

Activity: Look through a clear cup of water and then a wiggly plastic one—see how one distorts the picture? God helps us see clearly!

FRIDAY – Strength in Obedience

Scripture: James 1:22–25

Adults:

Faith isn’t just hearing—it’s doing. What command of Christ is He asking you to obey right now? Your obedience today builds stability tomorrow.

Youth:

Actions show what your faith is built on. What’s one way you can live out Jesus’ teachings this weekend?

Children:

The Bible says to be “doers of the Word.”

Activity: Make a “Doer’s Chart.” Write down one kind thing you’ll do each day this week to show love for Jesus.

SATURDAY – Unshakable Love

Scripture: Romans 8:38–39

Adults:

Even when life shakes you, God’s love never lets go. Spend time thanking Him for being your unshakable foundation.

Youth:

Write down three “storms” you’ve faced. Next to each one, write how God helped you through. His love is stronger than any storm.

Children:

Nothing can separate us from God’s love!

Activity: Use blocks to build a tower. Knock it gently—it may shake, but it doesn’t fall when it’s on a strong base. God’s love holds us up!
